The Tanker Mission
In-flight refueling is a critically important force multiplier, and an integral component of U.S. operational doctrine. America's tanker aircraft fleet enables it to support rapid global mobility, air superiority, global attack, precision engagement and homeland security missions.
For the U.S. Air Force's next-generation tanker requirements, the Northrop Grumman KC-30 Tanker can support more receiver aircraft and carry a larger number of troops over longer distances than other in-flight refueling platforms. Supplemental fuel tanks are not needed on the KC-30, nor is any conversion required to carry troops and cargo.
Substantial internal fuel capacity and high fuel transfer rates ensure that even the largest receiver aircraft are topped off by the KC-30 rapidly and efficiently. The ability to offload fuel simultaneously to several aircraft permits refueling with minimum cycle times. No ground reconfiguration of the KC-30 is required to handle different types of receiver aircraft, as the tanker comes equipped with a flying boom and hose & drogue refueling systems located in two wing pods and under the fuselage.
Support of special operations aircraft is part of the KC-30's basic mission profile, owing to the KC-30's excellent handling qualities throughout a large flight envelope - including at low altitudes and reduced airspeeds, and in day/night conditions.
The KC-30 is also well matched to the U.S. Air Force's passenger, cargo and medevac needs, and its size allows the aircraft to carry supplemental equipment/systems for additional missions. The tanker's widebody cabin accommodates approximately 280 seats for passenger transport, or up to 32 pallets on cargo missions. For medical flights, the aircraft can be fitted with approximately 120 litters, or 70 litters and six intensive care units with 113 passengers/medical staff on the main deck.
As the KC-30's internal fuel capacity already is optimized for its tanker duties, no additional fuel tanks are necessary - leaving its ample underfloor cargo compartments completely free for pallets, equipment and bulk cargo.
