Updates for Northrop Grumman Employees Affected by Southern California Wildfires

Northrop Grumman is monitoring wildfires in the Southern California region and will notify employees with updates as they become available. Employees whose commutes may be impacted are advised to check local news outlets (television, radio, Internet, etc.) before leaving to/from work. Updates can also be found at www.fire.lacounty.gov and at http://www.ocfa.org.

Employees are urged to contact their supervisors as soon as possible if they will be missing work due to mandatory evacuations of their homes and/or the roads are not accessible to get to/from work.

Red Flag Warning in Effect

The National Weather Service has indicated that current weather conditions constitute a "Red Flag Warning." This warning is in effect for all mountains, foothills and valleys of Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura and San Diego counties due to an extended period of high winds and very low humidity.

For additional information, see the Los Angeles County Fire Department Web site or the Orange County Fire Authority Web site.

According to the National Weather Service, a "Red Flag Warning" means that critical fire weather conditions are either occuring now or will shortly. The low relative humidity will create explosive fire growth potential.

Air Quality Advisory

All residents in Southern California are advised by the South Coast Air Quality Management District to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities because of smoke.

Some other tips from Los Angeles County officials to help cope with bad air:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity.
  • Do not use fireplaces, candles or vacuums.
  • When indoors, keep windows and doors closed. Air conditioners can remove particles from the air, but if residents do not have an air-conditioning unit and are getting too hot, they should consider going somewhere with air conditioning. The county warns residents not to use air conditioners that draw in air only from the outside and do not have a recirculating option.
  • Don't smoke.

Beware of Potential Internet-Based Scams and Viruses Related to Regional or National Emergencies

Northrop Grumman employees should be acutely aware of the immediate potential for scams and viruses related to regional or national emergencies (such as hurricanes, fires, earthquakes or terrorist attacks) posted on the Internet.

After similar situations in the past, e-mails and Web sites on the Internet claimed to contain exclusive video of the disaster or to solicit donations for the disaster relief efforts. The e-mails often included malicious code that attempted to infect computers with viruses, spyware or Trojan horses.  Other e-mails appeared to be legitimate donation requests but were in reality phishing attacks that directed users to a malicious server that collected credit card numbers, PayPal logins and personal information.

There are reports of questionable relief fund sites already available on the Internet. Numerous recent disaster items are also available on eBay, including domain names that sound like relief fund sites.  Many of these auctions claim that a portion of the proceeds will go to the disaster relief efforts.

These kinds of scams and attacks seek to take advantage of our charity and our curiosity. The most successful of them look professional and legitimate. They can appear to be identical to authentic relief fund sites.  The best protection against these attacks and scams is to donate directly to reputable charitable organizations.

If you receive any questionable e-mails, do not reply.
