Employee Matching Gifts for Education Program

NOTE: The Foundation now has an automated matching gifts system launched in 2008 (see Application Process below). Paper requests will no longer be accepted. Employee/donors must register their donations online. Thank you for your understanding during this transition.

Matching Gifts Frequently Asked Questions

The Northrop Grumman Foundation's Employee Matching Gifts for Education Program is designed to acknowledge and support our employees' commitment to education. Please check the eligible/ineligible education support lists below to assure that your organization will be considered.

Matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis, verified donations for education from $50 to $1,000 are eligible. The Foundation will only match two gifts, per employee/donor, per calendar year. The match total will not exceed the maximum of $1,000 for both donations.

The matching gifts process has two important steps:

Registration of the donation by the employee/donor
Verification by the school/organization

After verification, the Foundation can deny or approve the donation. If approved, the matching gift check will be sent directly to the educational institution. Regardless of the date of the employee/donor donation, the date upon which the submission is processed is the official date of the Foundation match.

The Northrop Grumman Foundation may change, suspend, or terminate this program at any time and reserves the right to determine whether any donation is eligible to be matched.

Spouses or children of current full time employees

Eligible Education Institutions

Public and private elementary and secondary schools
Private and public not-for-profit, degree-granting, two- and four-year colleges or universities, graduate schools, dental, medical or law schools, and vocational or technical schools accredited by a nationally recognized regional accrediting association or listed in the Higher Education Directory of Colleges and Universities published by the U.S. Office of Education
The gift is recognized as tax deductible by the Internal Revenue Service and the institution is not a private foundation defined by Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue code
Alumni foundations, fund raising entities or support groups (PTA, PTO, PTSA, etc.) must be affiliated with a qualifying school and have a separate 501(c)(3) status or comparable tax-exempt determination

All recipients of an Employee Matching Gift for Education grant must be recognized as a tax exempt organization under the U.S. Internal Revenue Service's section 501(c)(3).

This list includes, but is not limited, to:

Scholarships (not awarded to designated individuals)
General Fund
Annual Fund
Donations to specific departments (i.e., Engineering, Humanities, Business, Dental)

Ineligible Education Support

NOTE: Please do not list your donation as “unrestricted”, “where it is most needed” or “for the school to decide.” You have to designate how the donation is applied and that it is not for any of the following areas of support:

Athletic teams, support organizations or scholarships designed to benefit student athletes
Religious schools, colleges/universities or departments (within eligible schools) whose primary focus is to promote religious beliefs (includes seminaries)
Tuition, books or student fees (for individuals with which you are personally affiliated)
Fundraising events such as banquets or dinners, raffles, (dance-a-thons, walk-a-thons, jog-a-thons, phone-a-thons), cookie/bake sales
Choirs, bands or drill teams (for instruments, uniforms)
Home schools and home school support organizations
Capital Campaigns (building projects or expansion/renovation of existing facilities)
Campus student organizations (such as fraternities, sororities, honor societies)
Pledges (that have not yet been given)
Endowments (income-generating investments such as endowed chairs)
Bequests
Subscriptions or Membership Dues or Fees (such as public radio campaigns)
Advertising or underwriting expenses

Application Process

Employees who know their "MyID" can apply directly for the Foundation's Employee Matching Gifts for Education Program.

The unique identifier used for the Matching Gifts system is the "MyID," which begins with an A or a B.

Here are ways to find your "MyID."

Go to your Microsoft Outlook, find the Global E-mail Directory, and look up your name. When you click on your name for more details, a Properties dialog box will appear. Look under the first tab which is labeled "General." Your "MyID" should be listed at the bottom of the first column.
Check your paystub for the "MyID" number.
Look on the back of the HR Service Center card sent out by Benefits in January 2009. Your "MyID" is listed there.
